About the Virtual Museum

The African American Historical Society of Rockland presents our Virtual Museum, an online venue to share history, artifacts and photographs highlighting the peoples of the African Diaspora in Rockland County and the Lower Hudson Valley.

The inaugural exhibit is an interactive display of Black landmarks in Rockland County, NY. This exhibit includes images of sites such as the Hillburn desegregation case; historic churches built by freed slaves in Piermont and Nyack; the Mount Moor Cemetery in West Nyack; Rockland’s African burial grounds; the brickyards of Haverstraw; the remains of Skunk Hollow, a 19th century village built by freed Blacks; as well as the newly installed Bench by the Road in Nyack, NY, a project of the prolific author, Toni Morrison in addition to others.
