Nyack Underground Railroad Sign
The late Joseph Mitlof was an ardent advocate for uncovering history regarding the Underground Railroad (UGRR). At this spot on Main street, Mitlof marks the brook as an UGRR spot. He believed that individuals fleeing slavery would have used the brook as a landmark to find the Hesdra residence, which is thought to have been a safe house. No documented evidence exists about the brook, although this body of water did run across the Hesdra property and would have been a major identifier for the location.
